Raleigh, NC – May 11, 2020 – PCX announced today that the company has performed their first virtual factory witness test, due to COVID-19 travel restrictions, for a large hyperscale data center client. The test, which was requested by the hyperscale data center client, utilized live, high definition 6k video and screen sharing sessions to verify that the purchased equipment within the commissioned data center’s first core electrical room had been installed and assembled correctly, while operating according to the customer’s specification.
PCX utilized three sessions of the video conferencing application BlueJeans to perform the test and mimic a routine on-premises, factory witness test. The video feed from a handheld wireless 6k camera was used to inspect the electrical room both internally and externally, while a separate camera was utilized to allow for a closer inspection of the room’s components. While both cameras were used once more for the functional portion of the test, the third and final session of the test involved a screen share of the factory witness test script for the client representatives.
Gary Pollock, PCX’s Vice President and General Manager, believes there are certain aspects of factory witness testing that are enhanced by conducting it virtually for the client. Pollock states functional testing is enhanced due the participants being able to utilize multiple sessions of video conferencing technology simultaneously, to communicate and observe all activities taking place. “Simultaneous observation of the three activities is not possible during on-premise or in-person factory witness testing,” said Pollock. “While there are drawbacks to conducting the test virtually, multiple camera feeds enhance the ability to thoroughly observe equipment and components being tested.”
Pollock states that while virtual factory witness testing cannot replicate every aspect of in-person or on-premises testing, it is quickly on its way to becoming an industry standard. “At this point, I believe that certain factory witness tests will most certainly be conducted virtually as a standard, rather than an alternative,” said Pollock. “All parties involved in our virtual factory witness test believe that moving forward, most electrical power management system factory witness testing will be conducted virtually. This is due in large part to the manner in which multiple events can be broadcasted and viewed simultaneously."
